This book focuses on learning Cassandra by examples and exercises. It teaches you all the basic stuff like setting up a cluster, initializing a keyspace, CQL basics, using ‘nodetool’ and even building a simple application. It’s the perfect companion for a beginner who wants to do self paced training in Cassandra basics. I would also imagine that this book would be great for a teacher or course leader to build a beginner-level Cassandra course around. The book is based on Cassandra 2 and seems very much up to date.The book is well written and has good short explanations regarding core concepts such as partitioning and indexes. The major parts of the book are detailed hands-on exercises with screenshots of relevant parts (terminal windows and such). It even includes a download with a pre-configured virtual machine that has Cassandra installed to get going quickly.I would highly recommend it for beginners wanting to learn the basics of Cassandra.I bought the book since it was the only up-to-date (Cassandra 2) book currently on the market and I didn’t want to buy something outdated. I needed to get a quick introduction to the subject, which this book kind of gave me, but I also wanted to dig into more advanced topics. For that, this book was way too basic for me and I found myself reading the online documentation and various blogs instead.I’m therefore rating this book for what it is and what it tries to be, rather than for what I was looking for. As a hands-on beginner’s introduction it’s great.
I found this book very helpful for getting started with Cassandra. The labs are kind of fun and give you a quick overview of Cassandra. Being able to play around on a working system using virtual machines makes everything much clearer.The book does not go into a lot of detail, and instead gives you links to online resources. This gives it a nice pace where you progress quickly without getting bogged down. I went through the whole book and did all the labs in one weekend without hitting any major roadblocks, so the author was careful to "debug" the exercises.A few minor annoyances:1. There is needless repetition (the steps to do something are given and then a lab will repeat the steps verbatim).2. There's no index, so it's hard to find things (how ironic for a database book).3. It uses Cassandra 2.0 instead of 2.1, so you miss out on stuff like the improved cassandra-stress program.4. Manually tweaking the settings for each virtual machine gets tedious. There should be an included bash script to modify settings.Some important areas that are missing and could have had labs include:1. How to configure and use secure connections2. How to use QueryBuilder and the asychronous interfaceAs you start to write a real world Cassandra application, you'll be wishing there was also a level two book, but level one certainly lets you hit the ground running for using the online resources.
This is a great book aims at level one hands-on training for zero knowledge of Cassandra. I give 2 stars because a lot of the contents are repeated. The book contains a lot of half-empty pages (appears to be up to 30%) and plenty of spaces in a page. Copy and paste from page to page with errors. Compares its limited content with other books, it is too expensive. Check it out at the book store before you buy.
A must have book for the beginner. I needed something that would spoon feed me long enough to get me to a point where it made sense. This book does that. A little heavy on the spoon feeding in the beginning but if you ignore that it gets better.
Very useful - well written - well organized - and super easy to follow.Recommended for anyone who needs to deal with Cassandra on a daily basis and either doesnt know what is going on or has been away from it for a couple of versions and needs a quick refresher.
This look was very solid and thorough. It took a classroom approach and I felt that the approach was perfect for a novice to Cassandra.
